Eli Genovese took a sip of the pink drink, licked his lips, rubbed his tummy and held up his 4-year-old thumb.
“Mmm, yummy,” said the Queensbury UPK student, who approved the taste of the strawberry smoothie made by Chef Steve Sutliff Tuesday morning.
With blender in tow, Chef Steve visited all four universal prekindergarten classrooms at Queensbury Elementary School this week to give students a sample of the sweet drink made with strawberries, apple juice and yogurt.
“You can put anything in a smoothie,” the chef explained. “We can put vegetables in it. We don’t have to put yogurt in it. We can put all kinds of stuff, as long as we blend it all together. That’s a great way for you to try some different food options.”
“Santa could really use an energy boost,” said Chef Steve.
All students at Queensbury Union Free School District can eat lunch and breakfast for free, thanks to new federal regulations that have lowered the eligibility threshold. The district has seen an average increase of 500 meals eaten per day since meals became free on Nov. 1.
