About 45 students discussed connectedness and discrimination during a Diversity Summit on Monday, Jan. 29 at Queensbury High School. Working in groups, students developed action steps and recommendations to help ensure the high school is maintaining an inclusive environment.
The summit focused on culture and climate in the high school and allowed students to discuss their personal experiences in small groups. Administrators were not present during the discussions to allow students to comfortably and honestly share their opinions. Administrators then use the information to understand issues from the students’ perspectives.
“We work together to try to find solutions to make sure that everybody feels comfortable when they walk through the doors at Queensbury High School,” said Principal Andy Snide. “We really take this feedback, and we try to implement change.”
Previous summits have indicated that students are frustrated with the bathrooms at the high school. As a result, the next capital project includes money to renovate the gang-style bathrooms into single-stall restrooms.
“We want students to be part of making this building great,” said Michael Brannigan, director of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and School Development, “and making the school environment here as positive as possible.”
The same discussion will take place on Friday, Feb. 2 at Queensbury Middle School with students from grades 6-8.
