Approximately one in five children in this country has a diagnosable anxiety disorder. Anxiety can show up in many different ways — from anger or behavioral challenges to avoidance or perfectionism.
When children are experiencing a high level of anxiety, they may complain of various physical symptoms to avoid school or even outright refuse to go to school. This is extremely stressful to the entire family, often leading to chaotic and tearful mornings.
Dr. Jennifer Bashant will offer a virtual workshop to discuss “Strategies for Addressing School Avoidance or Refusal” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.
"Regular school attendance is so crucial to a child's academic and social-emotional development,” said Michael Brannigan, director of Social and Emotional Learning and School Development at Queensbury Union Free School District. “We want to partner with families to help support them anyway we can when children are reluctant or anxious. Dr. Bashant offers great insight on how we can combine our efforts."
During this webinar, parents will learn how to engage with their children and with the school to reduce the anxiety their children may feel about attending school.
