Fourth grade students pose with gifts they bought for families in need.

Fourth grade students at the William H. Barton Intermediate School adopted two families for the holidays. Kelli Moore and Toni Wiekierak’s students raised funds, went shopping and then wrapped gifts for the two families.

Moore said the students had to use real world math to figure out how to shop on a budget as they were purchasing gifts at the Walmart on Quaker Road.

Students carry bags of presents out of school. “We also hope the kids connect the experience to what we practice each day at WHBI — caring for others,” Moore said. “We are grateful to be able to share with our students the importance of giving back to our community.”

On Monday, Dec. 16, the students carried the bags full of colorful presents to a vehicle waiting to deliver them to the local families.
