Nearly 450 grandparents ate breakfast with third grade students during Grandparents Breakfast at Queensbury Elementary School the morning of Friday, Dec. 1. Students performed “Silver Bells,” “Hanukkah Lights” and “Sleigh Ride” as their grandparents ate pastries and drank coffee.
Principal Jessica Rossetti talked about the importance of saying “hello” and “goodbye” as she shared a story about her grandmother, who suffers from dementia and recently moved into an assisted living facility.
When Rossetti visited her grandmother during Thanksgiving, her gram jumped up out of her chair and yelled, “Jessica, what are you doing here?”
“And just as fast as she jumped, my heart jumped, because I thought, ‘oh my goodness, she remembers me,'” Rossetti said.
She encouraged the third graders to cherish the “hellos” and “goodbyes” with their grandparents.
“When you say ‘hi’ to your grandparents, give them that hug, give them that squeeze, make sure you take that moment to tell them how special they are,” Rossetti said, “and when they leave, do just the same.”
