Little girl eats hummus and gets it on her face.

Elaine Spangler lifted a cup of chocolate hummus to her mouth and licked the cup clean.

With chocolate smeared on her face, the 4-year-old announced, “It’s delicious!” and asked for more.

Elaine and her UPK classmates all sampled two flavors of hummus this week when Chef Steve Sutliff visited all four universal prekindergarten classrooms at Queensbury Elementary School with samples of the chickpea puree.

Students swiped a piece of whole grain flatbread through a clump of sundried tomato and garlic hummus and then dipped an apple slice into a dollop of chocolate hummus. The chocolate was the overwhelming favorite.

“'Hummus' means chickpea in Arabic,” Chef Steve explained. “It’s a healthier alternative than just your regular chips and dip or cheese wiz on crackers. It’s better for you. You get a lot of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals.”
