Queensbury High School Musical’s production of “Annie” has earned two High School Musical Theatre Award nominations for Best Technical Execution and Best Choreography.
The Queensbury High School Musical performed three sold out shows of “Annie” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 15-17. Queensbury sophomore Delaney Sano starred as Annie alongside junior Quinn Sheloski as Oliver Warbucks, senior Avery Magee as Miss Hannigan, and sophomore Adam Spero as villain Rooster Hannigan. Finley Magee played the role of Warbucks’ secretary Grace Farrell, Jordyn Lott played Lily St. Regis, and Carter Stanclift played FDR, Bert Healy and Mr. Bundles.
The orphans included QHS seniors Holly Pizzigati and Emma Maynard, freshman Alexa Bell, as well as QMS seventh graders Nevaeh Guzman and Mckenzie Cole and sixth grader Brooke Meilhede. The sets were once again constructed by Sean and Amanda Magee (Avery and Finley’s parents), and the show also featured the Magees’ dog, Clover, as Sandy.
“Best Technical Execution is stage crew,” said Director Andrew Terry. “It is lighting, it is sound, special effects, things of that nature.”
Student-choreographers Tenasia Longacker and Lola Leonard collaborated with choreography advisor Sara Curtis to create several of the dance numbers.
Delaney Sano and Finley Magee will represent Queensbury in the opening and closing numbers at the High School Musical Theatre Awards program, which culminates on the MainStage at Proctors at 7 p.m. May 4. Winners are announced for each category, interspersed with live production numbers from shows nominated for Best Musical.
During the spring musical season, schools are adjudicated by a panel of educators, theater experts and industry professionals in 12 performance or technical categories. When all the evaluations have been completed, scores are tabulated and certified. The highest score determines the winner in each category and winners are announced during the awards ceremony.
Tickets for the May 4 show are available through the Box Office at Proctors, in person or via phone at 518-346-6204 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday or online at proctors.org.
Last year, Queensbury High School Musical’s production of “Shrek The Musical” received six nominations and won three categories — Best Musical, Best Set Construction and Best Choreography.
Terry told some disappointed cast members after the nominations were announced on April 19 that performing is not about winning awards.
“We had three sold-out performances,” Terry said. “At the end of the day, we had three phenomenal performances. You have a lot to be proud of.”
