The Queensbury High School French Honor Society organized an overnight trip to Montreal for two fun and educational days from March 2-3. Forty students and four chaperones arrived to rainy and foggy weather and hiked to the top of Mount Royal.
They then left the city for the Sugar Shack, where students sampled traditional Quebecois foods, learned how maple syrup is made, listened to Quebecois music, and learned how to do traditional dances and play traditional instruments.
“This might have been the favorite activity of a lot of the kids,” said QHS French teacher Meghan Chance, who organized the trip.
The group then went back to the city for the Montreal en Lumier (Nuit Blanche) Festival.
“The music and art installations were really cool,” Chance said, “and we took the metro back to the hotel, so the first day was packed with new experiences for many of the students.”
The next day started with an early breakfast and a walking tour of the Plateau, the arts district, to see all of the street art and murals — tying in the junior English unit and senior French unit on street art. The group then explored Notre Dame Cathedral and the cobbled streets of Old Montreal/Old Port.
“Some of the kids rode on the big Ferris wheel and went ziplining over the Old Port,” Chance said. “The kids were excited to have time to shop and explore.”
The day ended with a visit to the Biodome, where the students saw animal habitats in five different ecosystem zones.
