Students at Queensbury Elementary School and the William H. Barton Intermediate School learned about Lunar New Year from their classmates who celebrate the 15-day holiday that starts on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

WHBI students Kelly Zheng Cheng, YiYang Jiang, Camilla Ma, Abbey Huang and Leah MacAlpine talked about their family traditions on the morning announcements. The students explained that 2025 is the Year of the Snake according to the Chinese Zodiac. Leah and her mom shared some of the Korean traditions of Lunar New Year. Kelly and YiYang shared more information back in Mrs. Dyer’s classroom, where students made their own Chinese Zodiac.

At QES, Aiden Shen, Jesse Liu, Trudy Luu, Brayden Zheng, Ivan Li and Eric Li appeared on the morning announcements to tell their classmates the significance of wearing red and eating oranges — they bring good luck. Orson Martindale’s mom provided all QES students with traditional red envelopes containing Character Cash.

In Mrs. Crocitto's class, Brayden Zheng's family brought in a special craft, and the students made snake puppets for the Year of the Snake.

In Mrs. Diamond's class, high school seniors Yiyang Wang and Christina Cheng Wu taught the students about the traditions and symbols of Lunar New Year. They showed the students how to write their names in Chinese and gave each student a mini red lantern.

In addition, Jesse Liu gave all of his classmates chocolate fish for good luck.
