Speech and reading teacher Susan Cunningham received the Dr. John V. Irion Award at the Queensbury Middle School on Wednesday, June 5.
Dr. John V. “Jack” Irion was Queensbury’s superintendent for 21 years from 1973-94. He was a devoted fan of Queensbury athletics and highly revered in the Queensbury community. Irion’s son, John Irion, the winningest gridiron coach in Queensbury school history, was on hand to help present the award.
English teacher Lynn Potter said Cunningham finds ways to teach students how to read and get them involved in school activities. She tries to make everyone feel included. Cunningham started the Kindness Closet, which provides necessary personal items such as clothing and hygiene items for students. She also advises the school’s Paranormal Club.
“Susie is, indeed, cut from a special fabric,” Potter said.
Cunningham called the award magical and humbling.
“Over the years I've spent here in Queensbury, I've experienced numerous milestones, and the support I've received from everyone here has been nothing short of incredible,” she said. “It's that support that makes coming to work each day an absolute pleasure.”
