Queensbury Union Free School District will offer one additional section of full-day Universal Prekindergarten for the 2024-25 school year. The district will now offer five sections of UPK and will be able to accommodate 90 children.

The 90 students will be chosen through a random lottery, which will be drawn on March 4, 2024. The lottery is now open on the district’s website at queensburyschool.org/o/qufsd/page/upk-round-up.

The lottery is available for children turning age 4 on or before Dec. 1, 2024. Children who are age eligible to attend kindergarten are not eligible for the UPK program.

“We are excited to be able to bring an additional 18 preschoolers to Queensbury Elementary School in September,” said Superintendent of Schools Kyle Gannon. “It’s so important to be able to offer a high-quality education at a young age and set up these young learners for success.”

The lottery will close at 5 p.m. on Feb. 29, 2024. Parents will be notified via email by March 5, 2024 of acceptance to the program or placement on the waitlist. Parents will be made aware of the registration and screening processes once their child's name has been drawn through the lottery.

Queensbury UFSD started its UPK program in September with four classrooms. The program has been a positive experience for all involved, said Principal Jessica Rossetti.

“The students have learned so much,” Rossetti said, “and having them integrated with the rest of our elementary community has been a great way to kick-start their education.”

It is also time to register for kindergarten at Queensbury Elementary School. Children must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2024 to register for kindergarten. Parents can register their children on the district website at www.queensburyschool.org/page/student-registration.

Kindergarten registration will be open until March 1, 2024. Children currently enrolled in Queensbury's UPK program, do not need to register for kindergarten.
