Queensbury physical education teacher and boys varsity hockey coach Dean Williams received the Dr. John V. Irion Award at the William H. Barton Intermediate School on Wednesday, June 5.
Dr. John V. “Jack” Irion was Queensbury’s superintendent for 21 years from 1973-94. He was a devoted fan of Queensbury athletics and highly revered in the Queensbury community. Irion’s son, John Irion, the winningest gridiron coach in Queensbury school history, was on hand to help present the award.
WHBI Principal Gwynne Cosh described Dr. Irion as caring, selfless, humble, present, genuine, personable, approachable and respected. Dean Williams shares these attributes, Cosh said.
“Students leave his class knowing how much they make an impact on people,” Cosh said. “Students become individuals in this building who work together for the greater community.”
Cosh noted Williams’ quick wit and sense of humor, especially during their morning announcements banter. Williams has a desire to instill character traits in his students and his hockey players that will carry them through life, Cosh said.
“Any hockey team in New York State knows of Dean Williams and his passion and fire for not only sports, but for the game of life,” Cosh said, “always leaving what you left in a better position.”
Surprised and touched by the award, Williams thanked his colleagues who make it a great place to be every day.
“It truly is an award for the entire building,” Williams said. “Thank you very much, but this award is because of all of us, all of you.”
